Reverse Shoulder Replacement Recovery: Timeline, Restrictions, Sleeping and Driving

The operation usually takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours and the hospital stay is 1 to 3 days. A sling is worn for 4 to 6 weeks, most light daily activities return within 6 to 12 weeks, and strength and movement keep improving for 6 to 12 months.

Key restrictions after a reverse replacement

  • Do not push up with the operated arm to get out of bed or a chair.
  • Avoid reaching behind your back (tucking in a shirt, toileting) in the first weeks.
  • Do not lift anything heavier than a cup of water early on.
  • Keep the sling on at night as instructed.

Sleeping, driving and returning to work

  • Sleeping: usually semi-reclined or on your back with a pillow under the elbow in the first weeks.
  • Driving: usually once the sling is off and you control the arm — around 6 weeks — and with your surgeon’s approval.
  • Desk work: may be possible after a few weeks depending on pain.
  • Heavy manual work: takes longer and needs your surgeon’s assessment.

Video: why does swelling happen after surgery?

Some swelling is normal after orthopaedic surgery; Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Shaarawi explains when it is normal and when to see your doctor (in Arabic).
